The journey of Squires Loft began in 1871 with the construction of the front section of our building. Built in the Victorian style with Bluestone foundations, Oregon beams, and four layers of handcrafted brick, the building originally served as a hall for The Orange Order. This historic space, filled with tall windows and handmade glass, was a sanctuary for the Protestant faith in a predominantly Catholic environment.
Fraternal Bonds and Community
In the early 20th century, the building became home to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), a charitable organization dedicated to promoting friendship, love, and truth. The hall became a hub for community gatherings and social events, enriching Ballarat’s social fabric for generations.
The Doll House Era
In the 1970s, the building entered a whimsical chapter as the “Dolls House,” where dolls captivated visitors, while the Ballarat Water Board used it for file storage. This lighthearted era added another layer of charm to its rich history.
Restoration and Renaissance
In 2006, the building was restored and transformed into Squires Loft Ballarat. Today, the Southern Cross inlay at our entrance symbolizes our commitment to preserving the building’s heritage. With original timber architraves and arched fireplaces, we offer guests an immersive experience that combines delicious cuisine with a glimpse into the past.
